Patty Neal

In my work, whether it’s landscapes or cityscapes, I am inspired by and drawn to shapes and
rhythms; geometries that are defined by light vs. dark, and color.
In my cityscapes the geometries are more obvious. The City tells a story in geometric patterns. It tells a story about old NY versus present day NY, about its relationship to the sky, to trees. The light or lack of it plays a big part in how the City is seen: buildings cast in shadow by other buildings, then opening to light. It’s important in establishing the rhythms and moods.
I’m drawn to views of the city that are not often noticed or are overlooked. Such as catching a glimpse of the City through trees, between buildings, beyond bridge supports, railings, construction. I like to emphasize the connections of seemingly unconnected things. It’s a city with many working parts, all jumbled together, all sharing in equal importance in the final frame.
