American Landscape painting has engaged and captivated audiences for centuries, and to that end, the Hudson River and the surrounding region have held a significant place in the history of American art. The Hudson River School is considered by many to be the first truly American school of painting. Comprised of three generations of artists united by an optimistic interpretation of constant changing scenery, their paintings reflected America’s unique national character. This same optimism remains very much alive in the works of our local contemporary landscape painters, even in the midst of such national upheaval.
On display from October 16 through November 23 at the Carrie Haddad Gallery are paintings by members of a new Hudson River School revival;
Harry Orlyk,
Craig Johns,
Leigh Palmer,
Jane Bloodgood-Abrams and
Dawn Breeze. From one to the next, their approach to the landscape varies, yet all contain a very personal interpretation of the picturesque and the sublime. An opening reception will be held on Saturday October 18 from 6pm to 8pm. All are welcome to attend.
